In the Beginning…

Thanks for checking out the first Road Dog Blog. DigMyCar.com has just gone live and I welcome you to submit your own Car Story.  It might seem intimidating, but if you’re passionate about about your car or the story behind it, its easier than you think. Just do it!

While the web site is new, it may be a challenge to sign in or move around the site efficiently. We’re working hard to fix everything quickly but it reminds me of life in the state of Michigan. You get used to the four seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring, and Construction. Well, construction in this case means modifications or updates to improve the web site’s usability.

Here’s a little background on myself. I grew up in the suburbs of Detroit, during the sixties & seventies. They say if you remember the sixties, you weren’t there. I can’t confirm that, but some things are probably best forgotten by now! Anyhow, I do recall how every working adult in the neighborhood worked in the automotive industry or had family and friends that did. They built cars that our families drove.

Most cars came with a radio and music was played over the AM/FM channels. If you were lucky, your car might have had an 8-track player but that was a luxury option. We also listened to the Detroit-Tigers games on the radio. Ernie-Harwell was the announcer and he would call out the name of a fan in the crowd, “foul ball CAUGHT by a young boy from Toledo named Eddy!”  I never did figure out how he knew who caught those balls…

Besides the Tigers, Detroit is known throughout the world as the:

These two elements led to a strong relationship between people, cars, and music. They go together like points, plugs, and condensers. It wasn’t just a local Detroit phenomenon. People across the country listened to music as they drove to work, traveled on vacation, or cruised Main Street.  Examples of famous car songs are:

To me, cars have always been more than just a way to get from here to there. Having a car represented freedom, power, and status. As a kid, I found freedom riding my blue sting ray bike with a banana seat and high handlebars. Then graduated to minibikes, a Honda dirt bike, and finally, at age 16, a car.  My dream car was the Chevrolet Corvette. But even then, I knew the odds of me getting that car were about as good as Farah Faucet asking me out on a date. Never gonna happen!

You can read about My First Car story here.  And since that first car, I’ve bought many more, including trucks and vans. Due to a lack of income or family priorities, I never could get that dream car, much less date Farrah-Fawcett. But I’ve always enjoyed visiting classic car show rooms, car shows, and automobile museums. And I still like to drive two-lane roads in the summer with the top down. Only now I listen to music streaming from my iPhone.

Fear Nada,
