“Your Engine Shouts” – a Car Poem

Your Engine Shouts

Every morning, car, you drive,
and your engine shouts.

You can go, and stop fast,
and you are purple with blue spots.

Everyone else thinks
that you are dirty and ugly,
but I see the real you.
I know that secretly
you are orange underneath.

If you were gone, I would cry.
I’d look for you in my garage,
and when I found you,
I would be happy,
and I’d drive to a restaurant.

I really like this poem, not only because it has a car theme, but because it means something different to each person that reads it. This poem was written by a student who participates in the Inside Out Literary Arts program. Inside Out encourages Detroit public school students to develop their creative writing and communication skills. These activities help students to express themselves, use their imagination, and gain confidence.
