“Dance Like Everybody’s Watching” Car STory

When the weather cools, football fanatics come out of hibernation to cheer on their local teams. In Ann Arbor, home of the Michigan Wolverines, 110,000 fans show up at The Big House in their maize and blue colors – more color than you’ll see in prime-time leaf peeping season. All Hail!

The Big House

There are fans and then there are people that take it to the next level. Not only here in Ann Arbor, but in every college town in the USA. For example, check out Wolverine One, voted the #1 tailgate in America, where great BBQ, drinks, and music are provided by die hard Michigan fans.

I dig those cars, trucks, vans, buses, and motorcycles that display their owner’s team colors. Here are a few you’ll see on game days. If you own one or see one at a tailgate, submit it as a car story.

The featured car story today is about a die-hard Tennessee Volunteers fan with his custom Volkswagen bug. My mom (Oma) and I were in line at Home Depot in Knoxville and noticed the bright orange car parked right out front. Oma says, “I bet that belongs to the man behind us” in line. I’m not very observant, but when I turned and saw him wearing the orange-checkered hat with matching varsity Vols jacket, I figured Sherlock must be onto something.

Sho nuff, Oma was correct. The man was happy to talk about the car to anyone that would listen. He said he saved it from being salvaged and had the car restored to his specs. In addition to the paint work, the interior was refurbished with the “Volunteers” name stitched into the fabric. To top it off, there was a James Bond type button on the dashboard that he insisted on demonstrating for us. No smoke or oil shot out, just an audio sound of Rocky Top playing through the speakers.

At this point, he grabbed mom by the arm, and they danced in the Home Depot parking lot to the cheers of the other fans walking by! Go Vols!

Next year, when I have 100K readers, I’m gonna challenge everyone to submit their best tailgate story and photo!
